Make your WordPress site iPad ready

January 17, 2011 | No Comments Yet

WPLover has a straightforward guide on getting your WordPress-powered site optimized for the Apple iPad. It basically says you don’t have to do anything since like the iPhone it comes with the Safari mobile web browser, but there are a few tips and links if you’re concerned about an iPad-specific experience.

Biggest thing to remember: the iPad does not support Flash. If you can manage to do so, provide an alternative video source using the HTML5 <video> element.

Another helpful site is iPad Peek, which loads your website as it would on an iPad—both landscape and portrait modes. You can very quickly check any quirks without having to run out and get one.

No word yet on whether Automattic is releasing an official WordPress iPad app, but it would be interesting to see how much more you can do on a larger resolution mobile device now.

Plugin Readme files now support video

February 23, 2010 | No Comments Yet

A new feature that will benefit WordPress plugin authors and plugin users alike: you can now add video in the readme.txt file of a plugin. This information will be displayed in the WordPress Just like WordPress posts & pages support shortcodes and oEmbed, so do plugin readme files now. There are two ways of doing this: oEmbed, by entering the URL of the video in its own line, and shortcodes, by entering the type of video and the URL in between square brackets, e.g.:

  • [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EiKx_WSesk]
  • [vimeo http://vimeo.com/173714]
  • [wpvideo OO4thna8]

The feature currently supports three video providers: YouTube, Vimeo, and VideoPress. It must also be noted that object embed codes (the usual way of embedding videos on websites) is not supported, just the two methods above. View the test example here.

iBlog6 Video Contest

February 1, 2010 | 1 Comment

Aside from a logo design contest, iBlog6 is also running a video contest to “capture what blogging means to you, or highlight how blogging has changed your life, helped you earn, promote a project or cause, or some other similar theme.” This is a great opportunity for bloggers to express how this hobby, profession, art has impacted their lives, hopefully also in the context of the Philippine blogging scene.

This contest is organized as a means to celebrate how blogs and the bloggers behind it are:

  • Changing lives – their own and/or of those around them;
  • The way blogs allow them to communicate their ideas and thoughts;
  • The way establishments, whether profit or non-profit, use blogs and bloggers to reach out;
  • and many more..

Entries will be judged according to concept, visual artistry, editing, production value, and overall impact. You need to be at least eighteen to be eligible. The winner will be announced during the iBlog event and will receive an 8GB iPod Nano.

Deadline is on March 7. Read the full mechanics here.

Early look at the WordPress 3.0 Menu Management interface

January 29, 2010 | 1 Comment

Over at the WordPress Development Updates blog, there’s an alpha preview of the Menu Management user interface that will be included in WordPress 3.0. Here’s the video:

Here’s a quick preview of the new menu management admin page (still alpha stage).

It highlights the dropdown section, which is the only unfamiliar element. All the rest are borrowed from the widget management screen.

Feedback on the UI is very welcome, either here, or on the dedicated ticket: #11817.

As mentioned in the post by Scribu, the interface is similar to the Widgets page. You can select either a page or a category from its respective dropdown menus, and when clicked it gets sent to the active menu panel on the right. There you can reorder the items. You can also add specific links and the Home link.

This feature can’t come soon enough! People tend to “hack” together site navigation menus in WP themes and for ordinary users editing them is a pain. Making WordPress features more usable through new interfaces like this is always a good thing.

Got feedback or want to keep up with this upcoming WP feature? Bookmark this Trac page.

September 18, 2009 | No Comments Yet

The Philippine Blog Awards 2009’s first teaser video was a little skit entitled “Blogger”. Now we have a fun little “Jingle” featuring the Philippines’ most famous blogs. There’s even a little nod towards WordPress at the beginning. Check out the lyrics:

Lyrics and Music by: Coy Caballes

Binuksan ko ang laptop
Homepage ko ay Technograph
Ako’y Pinoy Blogero
Sa WordPress ay adik ako

Let’s Go Sago, Lakwatsero
Coron hanggang Batangas sobrang Byahilo
Kahit ako’y mag-Visit Sagada
Basta may WiFi ay solved ka na

Laging Good Times Manila
Basta naka-online enjoy tropang Foodista
Alam mo lahat Da Who sa showbiz landia
Talo mo pa si BryanBoy Abunda

Over the top sa page views
kahit Patay Gutom busog ka sa news
Dumating si Mommy galing Project Manila
Nahuli niya si daddy nasa Facebuko niya

Let’s go, c’mon! Kung gustong sumikat
Just wear your Happyslip at sa Merryland umakyat
FunnySexy man o Komikero ang drama
Sa Radio Cubao natin wala nang panama

Okay lang ang maging Misteryosa
Basta Awesome Planet ating ipakita
Kahit sino ka pa, Batang Yagit o Tanggera
Basta Pinoy at Blogger… Tayo ay iisa

Basic image editing in WordPress 2.9

September 15, 2009 | 1 Comment

Jeff Chandler of WordPress Tavern has recorded a screencast on a major new feature coming in WordPress 2.9, which he discovered in one of the nightly builds. This was the third most popular feature voted on in the WP 2.9 media manager survey from a few months ago.

I fired up my local server today and installed the latest version of WordPress 2.9 and was surprised to see the basic image editing tools already available in the media library. I decided that the best way to display them in action was through video which also gave me another reason to open up CamtasiaStudio. In the video, I show off each individual tool as well as provide feedback on the crop tool as at this stage, does not appear to be user friendly. But, it’s very early in the development stage so it will most likely be better once it hits the public’s hands. Check out the video.

Functions include crop, rotate, flip, undo/redo, and scaled resizing. You can also apply the changes made to all the images in the library in one go—now that’s the most useful feature of all.

Jeff comments that the interface still needs polishing but the features work well. Can’t wait to see what else WP 2.9 has in store for us.

Catch the Philippine Blog Awards 2009 livestream

September 10, 2009 | 1 Comment

Can’t make it to the Philippine Blog Awards on October 9? Flippish will be streaming the awards night live on its website. And it won’t be a delayed, low-quality stream, but something that will rival TV productions:

This event is dappled in awesomeness. We’re trying something new this year — a live stream coverage of the event over the Internet courtesy of Flippish. If you’re expecting fixed point webcam quality work with a 30 second delay, well we’re out to prove you wrong. The live coverage has similar production value as on television, except that everything will be streamed via a dedicated line over the Internet. For those who will be unable to join us on that day, the live stream is actually the best way to follow the awards night.

Enjoy this teaser video too:

Google’s Matt Cutts praises WordPress for SEO

August 31, 2009 | 1 Comment

Take it from Matt Cutts, head of the Web Spam team at Google: WordPress is a “fantastic” choice for search engine optimization. That’s what he said at his talk at WordCamp San Francisco last May. Here’s the presentation video:

And here are the slides:

According to Matt, “WordPress takes care of 80-90% of (the mechanics of) SEO”. He goes on to explain PageRank calculation, and what you can do within WordPress to improve search engine ranking, from tweaking post permalinks (hyphens are best, followed by underscores; but no spaces are the worst) to securing your WP install (add .htaccess to your wp-admin folder and update often!).

Video of the annual State of the Word, delivered by Matt Mullenweg at Automattic-hosted WordCamp San Francisco 2009, is now up at WordPress.tv. It’s also embedded above for your easy viewing pleasure.

For the uninformed, the State of the Word is a fun little presentation on WordPress, of course, to see how far it’s come and what’s in store in the coming months. You might remember that one of the biggest highlights in this State of the Word was the announcement that WordPress and WordPress MU are going to merge, so now those who weren’t at the event itself can find out exactly how Matt said it.

Those who are looking for text-based summaries of the State of the Word, check out the press coverage links on the homepage of WordCamp San Francisco 2009.

Philippine Blog Awards 2008 date and venue announced

July 31, 2008 | 3 Comments

Update: Here’s the official announcement at the Philippine Blog Awards blog.

We’re getting closer and closers to one of the biggest Philippine blogging events of the year, and it just so happens it’s also in September, like WordCamp Philippines. Yes, the Philippine Blog Awards night will take place on September 21, 2008, at the Coral B room of One Esplanade (near SM Mall of Asia and Manila Bay).

Here’s a video announcement and tour of the venue:

A few minor notes on this event: the date was originally August 30, but because it was announced that the Eraserheads reunion concert will be held that night, PBA 2008 had to be rescheduled. Also, the website has been migrated to a new server, so you may be seeing the default WordPress theme instead of the snazzier design.
